If the Honda Passport name rings a bell, you’re not imagining things. The
very first Honda SUV wore that badge from 1993 until it was discontinued in
2002. Now it’s returning to Los Angeles — twice, in fact — first to the 2018 LA
Auto Show, and then to Keyes Honda as a 2019 Honda model.
With three SUVs already on offer,
where does the Honda Passport fit in? It’s reported to be bigger than both the
Honda HR-V and Honda CR-V, but slightly smaller than the Honda Pilot. It will offer seating for five, and there are hints that this new
crossover will be targeted more at an adventuresome driver; the initial
announcement touts it as an “off-road-capable SUV that hits the sweet spot
between daily driving comfort and weekend off-road, all-weather adventure
capability.”
It’s too early to say what the specifications
will be. Its features, from the powertrain to the trim levels and available
technology, won’t be revealed until November 27. Given the tight timeframe
between the auto show and the first models arriving at Honda dealerships, we’re
betting on a production model and not a concept car. Of course, we’ll have more
information on this and any other new developments for the Honda brand in early
December after the dust settles.
It’s about to get a bit more
crowded here at Keyes Honda. That’s not a bad thing. This is our third all-new
model in two years’ time, joining the Honda Clarity and Honda Insight, and
giving Los Angeles drivers more choices than ever if they want to get behind
the wheel of a Honda SUV or car. We think that’s a good thing.
